The Basilica Santa María la Mayor It is one of the most beautiful monuments of the Elizabethan Gothic of Galicia, which has earned it the title of “Pearl of Galician art”It is located on Avenida de Santa María, in the urban center of Pontevedra, on an elevation of the land that dominates the Lérez river and the estuary, where there was a small Romanesque church. The dizzy guild financed the new temple in the mid-16th century and was erected as a Basilica in 1962.
East National Monument It combines the Gothic style with the Portuguese Manueline and Renaissance elements. It has a basilica floor with three naves with side chapels. They highlight the ribbed vaults inside and the altarpiece of High altar, carved in noble woods.
Outside we will see the large main facade raised as an altarpiece of three bodies with a representation of the Dormition of the Virgin, Saints Peter and Paul flanking the cover, in addition to the profuse iconography that complete the set. To the left of the entrance is the Christ of the Good Journey to which everyone asks for protection when moving.
It can visit for free, from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tourist visits are not allowed during worship or scheduled parish activities.
