The Church of San Gil and Santa Ana, better known as Santa Ana Church, is located in the Plaza of the same name, in the center of Pomegranate, Next to the New Square and the start of the Carrera del Darro.
It belongs to the interesting set of Mudejar churches in the city. It was erected on the old Almanzora mosque in 1537 with design by renowned architect Diego de Siloé. The Mudejar and Renaissance styles live harmoniously, resulting in this beautiful work.
It consists of a single nave with ten side chapels of Mudejar coffered ceilings. The beautiful Main Chapel It has artistic details of great value among which we can appreciate the paintings on the walls. In the Sacristy a chalice is treasured from the mid-16th century, the work of Francisco Téllez.
Outside, the tower stands out, the old brick minaret of the mosque that was preserved and its main cover, Plateresque style, with semicircular arch and a medallion with the Virgin and Child.
In its environment we also find the Royal Chancery, today the Provincial Court, the House of the Pisa and the Tourist information office. Among the curious facts we should mention that Mariana Pineda’s wedding took place in this church. The visit can be made during worship hours and admission is free.
