The Dome of the Florence Cathedral it was made by Brunelleschi, when he won the contest that the Work of the Duomo He had summoned to cover the 42 meter wide octagonal drum of the Presbytery. The design that took 16 years to carry out is a work of engineering art. It can be considered one of the most important works of the Renaissance.
Taking the idea of the dome of Pantheon of Rome, Brunelleschi devised an octagonal dome of self-support, which did not need any formwork. It consists of two overlapping caps. The exterior, 80 centimeters thick, and the interior, more than 2 meters thick. Finally a white marble lantern is added, which raises the height to 114 meters.
As a result, a space of 100 meters of internal height by 42 diameter is obtained totally free of supports or visual interferences. Something unthinkable for the time.
The inside a decoration of 3,600 square meters of frescoes that Vasari did, with the Universal Judgment as a central theme
Uploading the 463 steps that lead to the top of the Dome we can clearly see the structure of it. The steps are of different types and the stairs are of uneven slopes, with the last section almost vertical. It is not advisable for the less intrepid.
From the lantern of the Dome there is a privileged view over the city of Florence and its surroundings.
